About this blog

'In a young land' reflects on story and place in this land of my birth - Aotearoa or New Zealand. Both names have significance and meaning to me.

The idea for the blog was conceived in early December 2011 while on the ferry 'between the islands' from Wellington to Picton. I was reflecting on Waitangi Day and Anzac Day. Each time they come around, I wish I knew more - the details and nuances in the history, rather than the mythologies built up around those days.

So the blog began as an attempt to deepen my knowledge and awareness of New Zealand history, and share my learnings, experience and reflection on 'being a New Zealander' in this land at the 'bottom of the world'. Like me, it has been rather erratic - a few postings early in 2012, then a long gap. It was resurrected in early 2014, as various ideas sparked by experiences in Auckland and Northland took hold of me.

Enjoy the read.
